On May 29, 1994, around 7:00 AM, a passerby discovered Jody's car, abandoned and burned, along a deserted road in the tiny community of Ottawa Lake, MI ( near I-25, 2 miles from Toledo, OH). This location was also 100 miles South of Pontiac, Michigan, which is where Jody intended to go to see her cousin. It was also where Jody told her friend she was the previous night before during the suspicious phone call. After further investigation, authorities discovered two things: 1) The fire to Jody's car was set intentionally in the passenger side. 2) There was no trace of Jody, or what may have happened to her.
At the time Jody vanished, she had a part time fast food job, from which she had saved money up from to purchase her car. She was content with her family, and had no reason or desire to runaway. At the time she vanished she was 5'3" and weighed 122 pounds. She has blonde hair and green/blue eyes. She also has the initials JB tattooed on her left hand between her thumb and fore finger. She also has a tattoo of a cross with radiating lines on the inside of her left ankle.
Of course, the run away theory was investigated for Jody. She was a teenager, and left of her own accord, alone, to drive a few states away. I believe the discovery of her charred car helped dispose of the theory that Jody is just another "run away teen". Another theory is that Jody had car trouble, or had gotten more lost, and inquired for help, which she may have received from the wrong person(s). Her family believes this theory, and they also believe this person(s) was someone Jody did not know. In 1994, remains found in a landfill in Lucas County, Ohio was thought to be Jody, but it turned out not to be a match.
Jody's disappearance is featured in this CrimeStoppers book by Cal Millar, who says Jody's case on one of the coldest of the cold. It is for sale on Amazon. |
My theory is that if she did make it by Pontiac, MI, she may have been forced to make a call to her friend (funny she called her friend to say she was okay instead of her mother). I believe if she was in that area at all, the person who took her is one she knew. If she did not make it to the area, (which is what I think because I believe she got more lost) inquired for directions, and was picked up by a predator, who probably figured a lost, teen girl would be a good target. One way or another, I firmly believe she was abducted, than forced inside her abductor's car after her car was set on fire. If her captor was unknown, she could be any where, but if it is someone she personally knew, I believe she would be around her hometown area of Pontiac, MI (this is based on other cases across the US). It seems unlikely she would be near where her car was found.
From 1990-1998, there was a slew of unsolved murders & disappearances involving young women, with many cases involving an abandon car, similar to how Jody's was found abandoned. Here is a short synopsis for all the cases that may be connected by one man: murderer Christopher Below, who authorities believe had victims in Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and other southeastern states:
Shaylene Farrell was last seen running errands at a grocery store. Her car was later found abandoned in the parking lot. |
*Shaylene Marie Farrell from Piqua, Ohio, vanished on August 8, 1998, was last seen running an errand at a nearby Pick-N-Save grocery store where she worked at. Her car was found abandoned in the parking lot later on. She was never seen again.
Erica Fraysure was last seen out with friends, and her car was found abandoned in a hayfield. |
Regina Cox was last seen at an army recruiter's office. Her car was found abandoned in a Wal-Mart parking lot. |
Heather Teague was abducted while sunbathing at Newburgh Beach. |
Paige Renkoski was last seen pulled over off I-96 talking to two African American males. Her car was abandoned in the same spot it was pulled over at, and Paige was nowhere to be found. |
Alana Gwinner was abducted from Gilmore Bowling Lanes. Her body was found in Ohio River in Kentucky, and her car is still missing. |
Until there is evidence that points to foul play for Jody, I do believe she could still be out there. Maybe forced into hiding like Jaycee Dugard, or human trafficking. It would be nice to believe that she is out there, living a happy life, but there is not enough evidence to point us in any direction. The person who took her could have been anyone-a trucker, a drifter, a local. All these cases noted above share similarities to Jody's disappearance, especially Paige Renkoski, both who vanished off an interstate in Ohio/Michigan areas. Some of these cases may be connected to each other, or they could be connected to Jody's. Also, if you look on the Murderpedia list for criminals in Ohio, you will find many serial killers, some of them truckers, who could fit the profile of Jody's abductor.
These three sketches are of the unknown men last seen with Paige Renkoski standing by their vehicles on I-96. They are the last people Paige was last seen with, and it is not believed that she knew them.
Cal Millar, a reporter from Toronto Star in Canada, wrote the nonfiction book called Find My Killer, which helped solve many homicides, honed in on missing person cases across North America. Out of all the missing persons cases, one of the many that he took a special interest in was Jody Brant's abduction. He included her in his 448-page book called I'm Missing-Please Find Me. This book has helped Jody's case tremendously, and I am thinking about picking it up so it can assist me in adding more details in Jody's case. Since her case is so cold and inactive, it has been difficult to find information about her disappearance to do her case entry, but it's obvious something terrible happened to this teen girl, and her story deserves to be out there so she can be found.

ReplyDeleteI live near the area where her car was found. Think about her every time I drive down that road. I hope that one day her family finds out what happened.
I was her best friend at the time I love her very an I hope they find her. She is tough an I know if someone took her she fought.Gid bless you Jody.Where ever you are.
DeleteHey how are you ? I kept this old mailbox card of missing persons in my toy box as a kid. I just came across it. Has anyone heard what happened or any leads at all ? It makes no sense ... Email me if possible. Thanks. Especially her friend on here. I was born the same time as Jodi so as a kid I got the mail and kept the mailbox values card with get picture. She was really pretty.
DeleteDavid where do you live?
DeleteThis is my cousin. I miss her dearly and wonder all the time. Thank you to all who are trying help. If I can assist at all please contact me.
DeleteTo the bastard that took my friend I hope that you rotte in hell your the reason I carry a gun every where I go hoping someday or paths will cross an blow you the fuck away. To all the lady's out there. Arm your self an shot to kill. Let's even the score. Never be afraid an always fight back til the end!
ReplyDeleteWith may 27 coming up soon I pray to my godess Kali for vengeance. I ask for the person responsiable for her death to suffer a slow painful death.
ReplyDeleteIf they fount jodys car burnt up its because she fought back, she could fight lol I know the bastard bled or something there was a struggle,it wouldnt suprise me if he had to kill her there cuz she wasnt gonna let anyone take her with put a serious fight! She wasnt the type of person to scare easy. I love ypu Jody lynn Brant, you live on in my heart.I will never forget!!!!
ReplyDeleteShe was my step cousin i was not close to her at the time but i met her a few times and my step father was her mothers twin brother. Rumors i have heard was that her cousin roy jones molested her. He has been to or is in prison for a number of offenses. I dont know for sure wht happend, i wasnt around then but if i had to guess the family probably had something to do with it. After her death her mother donna died of an appearnt overdose. I hope someday they both get their justice. They came from a really messed up family. At one time her mom thought she may have been sold into sex slavery, i personally think she died in Georgia and they dumped the car in ohio, i have no proof its just a feeling i get. I am estranged from that family and have been for sometime. Good luck in your search her uncle owned a junk yard at the time in Norcross.
ReplyDeleteWe love our family, and we always stuck together. My dad took care of his family and still does. Its no wonder y ur distant!
Deleteim not scarred to tell u this is jennifer the cousin she was coming to see! we love jody! maybe u had something to do with it...distant cousin!
DeleteI went to school with Jodi and agree with what the other person said, she was definitely a tough one and wasnt taken easily. This disappearance effected my life being that it happened to someone i called friend. I cried for her and grew into a very protective mother. Im sure my kids hate it but understand because i have told them the story. I also know Joe and feel so sorry that he has to carry his sisters disappearance with him for the rest of his life. I hope that something is found out in his life time so that this can be put to rest and him and his fam can have closer. *Missed and never forgotten*
ReplyDeletewe all do! i am the same way with my kids, still to this day!
ReplyDeleteFirst let me say my name is Jessica Jones and I am from the so called fucked family the ignorant bitch above called us. All families have their flaws and fuck ups but I will tell you this, my aunt Donna and uncle Rick were the best they could be. Jody and all of us Jones kids are rough as hell and will be til death. I hope justice is brought sooner then later, but one day we will all have our closure and day of revenge. There is nothing fucked up about my family Becky!!! I know you are, considering I know my family very well and I now understand why your mom took off and left your dumb ass behind. Don't bad mouth my family. Jody's patents didn't allow her to take this trip, she went on her own without telling she was leaving because she knew she would never be permitted to do so alone. She was a teenager for Christ sakes and ALL teenagers do stupid shit!!! Jody, where ever you are, I love you, I miss you and I pray for you every night!!! Love always, jessie
ReplyDeleteWhat is your family's theory to what happened to Jody? Also I wonder how thoroughly her disappearance was investigated.I hope that there are answers one day soon.
DeleteFrom what info is out there on this case it sounds like Jody made the trip to meet up with a guy(or girl) and something went wrong. Girls don't make discrete long distant trips just to visit cousins. Another clue is the phone call she made saying she had arrived when she clearly hadn't, unless she had indeed arrived to where she had planned on going in the first place. She likely would have went to visit family but it doesn't appear(on the surface anyways) to be the motivating factor of her trip.
ReplyDeleteEither way, such a cruel fate for a beautiful young woman.
So sad I always wonder wha t happened to shaylene Farrell I hope one day family for all these women can receive answers and some sort of closure
ReplyDeleteShe is gorgeous so sad, she deserved a real man and instead she got what happened to her urgg
