Sharon Rose Sons-Missing 19 Years

ON October 20, 1993, 28 year-old Sharon Rose Sons left her boyfriend's residence in the 500 block of Cane Run Road in Lexington, Kentucky to use the phone at the laundromat, Russel Cave Plaza. She never returned and has never been seen or heard from since. She was last seen by her boyfriend of four months whom she lived with, Willie King, who at first told police Sharon left to take a walk to the nearby laundromat to see a relative who operated it. She was a night club dancer at the time she vanished, and she left behind an 11 year-old son.
Son's boyfriend filed a missing person's report before informing her family she was missing. Sons was very close with her family, and often contacted they by phone after she moved in with her boyfriend, Willie King. By the time he had informed her family, Sharon had been missing for weeks.

Sharon was 5'1" and weighed 98 pounds when she vanished. She has blonde hair and green eyes, and has a C-section scar on her abdomen from the birth of her son. Sharon Sons has a torn ear lobe, a scar on the top of her head, and poison ivy scars along her arms and legs. She gets freckles in the summer and goes by the nickname Susie. She also has a tattoo of a partially colored rose on her right ankle.
When Sharon vanished, she was last seen wearing a knee-length denim skirt, sneakers, a plaid, gold chain with a flexible cross, a gold necklace that says "Willie", and three or four rings on her fingers.

I noticed that in her case description, they say foul play is suspected, but of course do not state why. I believe investigators know a lot more information than we have, and maybe for good reason too. From what little information I have been able to read up on, I believe foul play could be suspected due to things the public does not know, but LE does, the risks of her job as a night club dancer, or the circumstances involved of her disappearance (such as her boyfriend being the last to see her) that point to an apparent abduction/murder.
I am certain she did not run away-seems like she had good ties with her family, maintained contact and she also had a young son, whom family says she would never leave behind. I am wondering why she needed to make a phone call. Was she really going to make a phone call, or did she head else where? And how long of a walk did she have to the laundromat? I know this occurred in 1993, but were their any cameras at the laundromat to prove she was there?
I also question her relationship with her boyfriend-not much was mentioned about him, but it seems like her family question his eagerness to file a missing person's report. Both the family and police seem to think he at least knows more than he is saying. Did they have a good relationship? Were they able to for sure clear that she left the house by herself at all?
I have always wondered if there was a serial killer(s) in that region operating during that time, although the first theory is a more logical one.

Sharon Rose Sons would be 47 years old today as of 2013. She was last seen on her way to the laundromat to use the phone.
If the boyfriend is ever cleared, I think a stranger abduction may be the second most sensible scenario. Maybe she was in the wrong place at the wrong time? I also have thought about the possibility an admirer at the nightclub she performed at may have gotten too close, perhaps stalked her, saw and opportunity where she was alone, and took it. (I wonder what time she was last seen at? Did she ever have concerns about people from the club?) Also, did she have a vehicle that was found abandoned anywhere?
Going back to the stranger abduction theory, I have been making a chart of my own for young women who vanished in 1990s within the Kentucky and Ohio region. There are so many women, all similar characteristics, who vanished within that decade, or who have ended up murdered. The only difference with these girls is that they all had vehicles that were later found abandoned:

*In 1990, Fowlerville, Michigan, Paige Renkoski, 30 years old and engaged to be married, was last seen talking to an unidentified African American male, near an I-96 exit to Fowlerville. Her car was later found abandoned.
*In 1994, Jody Lynn Brant left on a road trip from Georgia to Michigan to see her cousin. She had called her family when she was in Erie, Ohio, and said she was lost. Later, her two door Ford Escort was found abandoned and burned. She had never made it to her cousin's.
*In 1995, Spottsville, KY, a man witnessed Heather Danyelle Teague get abducted by gun point from her spot at the beach by the Ohio River, and dragged by her hair into the woods. She was never seen again.
*Regina Cox vanished from Somerset, KY in 1997, she was last seen leaving an Army Recruiting Office, and her car was found abandoned in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
*Erica Fraysure was last seen in Brookesville, KY in 1997 after hanging out with some friends, and her car was found abandoned in a hayfield.
*Shaylene Marie Farrell from Piqua, Ohio, vanished in 1998, was last seen running an errand at a nearby Pick-N-Save grocery store where she worked at. Her car was found abandoned in the parking lot.
*In 1999, China Videon was last seen by her mother going to get gas in her hometown Christiana, TN. She was never seen again, and her car was found abandoned at an apartment complex.

**Now, here's one disappearance that fascinates me because it also occurred in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1997. Lydia Perkins was last seen on the corner of Rugby Drive and Picadilly Street, not far from where she lived. This is eerie to me not only because both Lydia and Sharon vanish from Lexington, KY, but they also vanished right off the streets while walking somewhere.
Laney Gwinner vanished from a bowling alley in Fairfield, Ohio. Days later, her remains were found in the Ohio River. Her murder remains unsolved. The picture of Laney on the left is of her hours before her abduction. (Photo credit: Butlersheriff.org &enquirer.com)

*In December 1997, Alana "Laney" Gwinner, vanished from the Gilmore Bowling Lanes in Fairfield, Ohio. 31 days later, her body surfaced in the Ohio River off of Warsaw, Kentucky-60 miles away from where she vanished. Her murder remains unsolved.

Now, I don't have the opinion that all these cases are connected together, but I do think some are connected to one another. I remember reading that Christopher Below is a suspect in Shaylene Farrell and Heather Teague's abduction. He is suspected in disappearances in Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina and Ohio. That is quite a span. I would like to see him considered for Sharon's abduction as well. Sharon's disappearance along with Lydia Perkins' also is eerie because of how close they happened, as well as circumstance.
Lydia Perkins also vanished while walking in Lexington, Kentucky.

**Please see the links below for more information about the disappearances of these young women.

Currently, Sarah Sons, the mother of Sharon, is still searching for her daughter, and even hired a private investigator to find out what happened on her walk to the laundromat to use the phone that day. Her mother is concerned that decades later, there is still little to no information about Sharon, and what happened to her. Sharon's family recently held a candle light vigil in November 2012 for Sharon, to remember her and keep her case alive.

Sharon Rose Sons is still missing, and her family is still searching.

Sharon's case is still open and her mother and family continue to search for her. If you have ANY information about the disappearance of Sharon Rose Sons, or any of these missing girls, please contact:

  1. Wow... I have followed a few of these cases. The similarities of the 2 ladies in Lexington strike as tge same assailant. I would also like to add Katelyn Marcum a young girl who disappeared from Gilmore Bowl as well.. the same bowling alley as Laney Gwinner. Katelyns body was found in Brookville Indiana
