These two girls are from my region, so I had to write about them today. On July 13, 2012, Lyric Cook Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins, who were cousins, went on a bike ride together. They were last seen together at a popular recreational lake in Evansdale, Iowa.For five months, they girls were missing with little or no leads to go on until their bikes and a pink purse were found by Meyers Lake on a trail. The months following that were quiet, as no leads developed.
On December 5, 2012, hunters came across two bodies within a secluded area in Seven Bridges Wildlife Area, 25 miles away from Evansdale. Although there is no positive ID on the remains yet, authorities have said they are positive the missing girls have been found. There are no other details as of yet.
Within Iowa and Southern Minnesota, it seems there has been quite a few attempted abductions within all age range recently. One consisted of a 61 year old woman who was grabbed by a man as she was trying to enter her home. The second was a 13 year old girl who was almost lured into a van by a male with graying hair, and a 35 year old woman was also almost abducted as she was taking a walk on a rural road.
It's not sure if these are connected to the girls' disappearance, or even to each other, but these three reported incidents had an older male with graying hair driving a white van in common. All these have happened within this year.
Also in September 2012, two fifth grade students in Spencer, Iowa were told by a man who pulled up in a mini van during recess to "come here". Teachers witnessed it, took the children away and called police. Authorities say it is similar to another attempted child abduction in Lake Park, Iowa this year.
Actually, just weeks ago, November 22, 2012 in Marion, Iowa, a 15 year old girl was approached by three African American males in a vehicle. The group made contact with her, and she barely escaped.
One month before Elizabeth and Lyric vanished, disappeared, three children were riding their bikes in Forrest City, Iowa when they were stopped by a man in a tan van, who told them he was going to get them. It is also believed this same guy, who is an Asian male in his 50s-60s, tried to abduct a ten year old boy from his front yard, by telling him to get in his van and show him where a church was.
I am unsure if there are any suspects in the disappearance of Lyric and Elizabeth. So I figured finding attempted abductions in Iowa within this year would be a good start. All these abductions are not done by the same person, but one of the suspects within these cases may be linked to the cousins' disappearance, and possible murder. I do not know why there is such a spike of attempted abductions in Iowa within this year, but it seems there has been from June 2012-November 2012. It does sound like the person(s) responsible is from the area because not only did they put them in a wildlife area, but they knew what the secluded areas within the park are.
This is absolutely not the outcome I thought would happen, I think everyone is blindsided by this. It is tragic, and there is much fear. Everyone is holding their kids close, and for good reason too. I just hope that since the girls have been found, whoever did this will be too. To take two kids at the same time in broad daylight is a very daring move, and if they have gotten away with it once, we can be certain they will try to do it again.
Please hold these girls in your prayers and hearts and think of their families! I will update the best I can, as this is something I have been following since it happened.
