On November 14, 1970, 18 year-old Robin Ann Graham spent her Saturday night hanging out with friends. After she dropped her one of her girl friends off, she dropped her car off at Pier One Imports where she worked part time in Los Angeles, CA around 1:45 AM. She left the store driving her boyfriend's car. The car was known to have stalled out around 2:00 AM on the Hollywood Freeway going south near Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Ave. A California highway patrol man says he saw her standing next to her car carrying a leather purse, and pulled over to see if she needed help. She claimed that her parents were on the way after she called them and told them she had ran out of gas. Her sister answered that phone call and relayed the message to her parents who arrived home around 2:30 AM.
He later saw her with an unidentified white male in his twenties who had his light blue hard top 1957-1960 Chevrolet Corvette parked behind Robin's boyfriend's car. The unknown man was wearing bell bottom trousers and a white turtle neck top. He stood at about 5'8" in height. The highway patrolman watched the unidentified male get Robin's boyfriend's car started, then they rode off in his car together. The patrolman says it appears Robin got into the man's car willingly.
The next day, her parents searched for Robin and found her car, locked up and abandoned on the side of the freeway. Robin has never been seen or heard from again.
Robin was a student at Pierce College when she vanished. She also had brown hair and brown eyes, and is 5'6" and weighed 125 lbs. She was last wearing a blue corduroy jacket with gold buttons, blue jeans, red clog shoes, a red Jersey blouse along with last being seen carrying a leather purse.
Months later, a woman came forward and said her car had also stalled alongside the freeway, and a man driving a Corvette stopped and offered to help her, saying he was an off duty detective. She refused his offer, and he left. There's been no proof this is the same man last seen with Robin, but it is probable. The woman later identified this unknown man as Bruce Davis, who is one of the numerous people suspected of being the Zodiac Killer.
Davis was a serial killer who held California in terror in the late 1970s. He continues to be a suspect in numerous unsolved disappearances and murders in California, including that of a couple that was found in an alley in the Silver Lake district not too far from Los Angeles. Each had been stabbed over 40 times. Not to mention, the realm concerning Davis' connections with Charles Manson, which is a whole different rabbit hole to jump into.
Being there is speculation Robin fell victim to the Zodiac Killer or Bruce Davis (or both, if they are one in the same), there are other cases we must look at that could be connected to Robin's disappearance.

In May of 1969, Rose Tashman, of Israeli descent, was on her way home from a friend's house in Van Nuys as she was studying for an upcoming test at Valley Junior College. Her family had moved here from Israel 7 years prior to her disappearance. Her tire went flat on her car around 2 A.M. on her way to her home in Hollywood. The next day, her abandoned 1965 beige Mustang was found near the Highway Avenue off-ramp on Hollywood Freeway, which would be only a few miles from where Robin would vanish from 2 years later. Flares had been set out around her car and her left tire was flat. It appeared someone had stopped to "help" her with her flat tire. Later, her nude body was found in a brushy ravine off of Mullholland Drive around 6 PM, nine hours after she was strangled and raped.

Lisa Smith was last seen hitchhiking in Santa Rosa. There is speculation her case could also be related to the Santa Rose Hitchhiker Murders. (Photo Credit: Charley Project.org) |
On April 20, 1972, Ernestine Terello pulled over due to a flat tire on Ventura Freeway in Agoura, California. Her car was later found abandoned but there was no trace of Ernestine. A month later, her full-clothed body was found on the Circle X Boy Scout Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains. She had over $2,000 od jewelry on. Detectives have theorized the person who killed her pulled over to "help" her with her flat tire.
On April 25, 1972, 20 year-old Jeanette Kamahele, of Hawaiian descent, was last seen hitchhiking off the Cotati on ramp off of Highway 101 in Santa Rosa, California. One of her friends was on their way to pick Jeanette up, but before they could, a 20-30 year-old Caucasian male with an Afro-type hair style picked her up in a faded 1970-1972 Chevrolet pick-up truck. She was carrying her leather purse at the time, and has never been seen again.
On June 19, 1975, Mona Jean Gallegos, of Hispanic descent, was last seen leaving a friend's house around 1 AM. She was returning to her Covina home from Alhambra when she vanished. Her abandoned car was later found on the San Bernardino Freeway at the Santa Anita Avenue around 4:45 AM. It was locked and out of gas. There was a 24 hour gas station near the off-ramp where her car stalled out, and detectives believe someone offered her a ride to that gas station. Six months later, her skeletal remains were found in a Riverside ravine. According the Times article by Robert Kitsler, detectives believe her disappearance is identical to Robin Graham's.
I believe all these unsolved cases could be connected, but at the same time they could not be. I think Jeanette Kamahele and Lisa Smith Are connected to the Santa Rose Hitchhiker Murders, which appear to be done by the same man. The six other girls, named Yvonne Weber, Maureen Sterling, Kim Allen, Lori Kursa, Carolyn Davis, Terese Walsh and Jane Doe. They were all 12-20 years old, and their remains were found amongst Hollywood Hills. You can read more about them The Santa Rose Hitchhiker Website Unsolved. However, her abductor has similarities to the man last seen with Robin the night she vanished. Santa Rosa is quite a drive from Los Angeles, but Highway 101 is almost s straight shot to Los Angeles.
Also possibly connected to the Santa Rose Hitch Hiker cases is the disappearance of 14 year-old Corrine June Groenenberg. She was last seen departing her family's Compton, California residence on November 1, 1973. A friend told authorities they saw Corrine walk to a nearby highway and hitch hike. The friend saw Corrine enter a blue or green pick up truck with an unknown male driver. She has never been seen since, and her case remains unsolved. The pick up truck she was seen getting into shares similarities with the truck Jeanette Kamahele was last seen getting into a year earlier.
I think Robin's disappearance is connected to Rose Tashman and Mona Gallegos. There has been no indication Rose or Mona are thought to be hitchhiker victims in Santa Rosa. Instead, it seems there were multiple killers preying on women along busy road with car trouble, in need of a ride. Possibly one killer targeted hitchhikers along Highway 101 or the Santa Rosa area, and another target the freeways by Los Angeles.
All three girls are brunettes, as were many of the others I presented that don't have enough to rule in or out as connections to Robin's disappearance. All three cases parallel each other. The victims look alike, and all had car trouble in a similar area. I think it's possible the girls with the flat tires, Cindy, Rose and Ernestine, may have had their tires slashed, with the suspect following them. With Mona and Robin, I believe the suspect was cruising the freeway in search of victims during the late hours. His liking would be brunettes with long hair. Ted Bundy was also thought to be a suspect, but was ruled out due to reasons I could not find.
Another case that has many similarities to Robin's, is one that was not entered in the NAMUS until December 13, 2013, is the disappearance of 25 year-old Gabriele Uralli. Gabriele vanished on September 28, 1978 near the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. Her vehicle with all of her personal belongings and identification was found in her abandoned car amongst the bridge. Although a picture of Garbiele is not yet available, she is described as 64 inches tall and weighing 100 pounds. She has strawberry blond hair and green eyes. She also had a scar on her abdomen and speaks with a German accent. I think it is very possible her disappearance is linked to Robin's, considering the area the car was found and the time frame.
One theory is that Robin was a victim of the Zodiac killer. She vanished on a full moon, which is when the Zodiac was known to strike. I believe this theory is very probable. So many young women vanished in the '70s, southern California from "car trouble." She may have left willingly, but I think who ever picked her up on the freeway that night fixed her car to gain her trust. Perhaps he offered her a ride to her parents' house, as she was also waiting for her parents to help her out that night. I think a pretty young girl like Robin, alone and stranded on the freeway at 2 AM is a target for any sadistic predator. I also think that the same guy who took Robin is the same guy who stopped to "help" the other young woman stranded on the freeway as well, being that the Corvette was spotted both times. I don't think the outcome is favorable, as she's been gone so long. I also don't think that Robin is the first victim and not the last either, but there is no evidence to point to foul play, only circumstance.

Still, her parents keep hope. They still live at the same home and have the same number now as they did in the '70s, waiting to bring Robin home. All the cases I have mentioned in this entry remain unsolved to this day. There is much more information then I could ever type about these cases in one entry. If you are interested in any of them, I advise you to research a lot of these cases which will lead you to other cases. The Zodiac case by itself is a big subject. These are cases almost half a century old. It would be great to find closure, and closure to one of these cases could be closure to many more as well.

Today, her birthday, Robin would be 60 yrs. old. I think it is so sad that she's been missing twice as many years as she was old when she disappeared. I believe if the circumstances were the same and it happened today, her abductor would be found. Computer checks would be able to search for that type of Corvette, registered within 200 sq. miles of Los Angeles. She was a beautiful young lady. May her abductor rot in hell.
ReplyDeleteKen, according to a story I read checks were done on Corvettes but who knows how that went.

Bother of her parents have both passed actually. Her mother Beverly passed on mothers day of 2008, and Marvin in June of 2010. -Granddaughter

DeleteI was wondering if anyone knows if Robin Graham had an aunt named Grace Gene Graham? She may have went by Gene. It would be Robin's dads sister.
Yes she is the aunt, Marvin’s sister.
DeleteThank you for the update.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your effort and time in writing this. I have researched Mona Jean Gallegos case on and off now for several years and I believe the Corvett mentioned is crucial.

I pray all these people are found. And their culprit brought to justice.
